Gakushuin University and the International Centre often receive visitors from our partner universities and other organizations overseas. Below are reports about such visits.
Visitors from Utah Tech University, United States May 9, 2023
On May 9, 2023, Dr. Nancy Hauck, Associate Provost of Community & Global Engagement, and Ms. Christine Loveless, Study Abroad Coordinator, from Utah Tech University visited Gakushuin University. They had a meeting with Professor Rtischev, Director of the International Centre, Professor Hikotani and Associate Professor Yanamoto to exchange their views about future collaboration between the two universities. After the meeting, the visitors had a casual conversation with three exchange students from their university currently studying at Gakushuin, who showed them around the campus later.
Gakushuin started student exchange with Utah Tech University in September 2022. A Gakushuin student is currently studying at Utah Tech and two will start their exchange programs there this coming fall. It is expected that this visit will lead to an enhanced relationship between the two universities.
Visitor from Troy University, United States April 25, 2023
On April 25, 2023, Mr. Lance Noe, Director of ESL Programs from Troy University, Alabama, USA, visited the International Centre. He exchanged views about short-term training programs and possible future cooperation with Professor Rtischev, Professor Hikotani and Associate Professor Yanamoto. Then, he met with a Gakushuin student scheduled to study at his university from this coming September.
Four Troy students who will start their exchange programs at Gakushuin in April 2024 are currently taking online the Japanese Language Preparatory Course (JLPC) offered by Gakushuin. They are looking forward to coming to Japan next spring!
Visitors from Dongguk University, Korea April 21, 2023
On April 21, 2023, the International Centre received visitors from Dongguk University in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Associate Professor Yanamoto and some International Centre staff members met with Mr. PARK Sunhee, Director, and Mr. JUNG Jae-Hoon, Manager, both from the Office of International Relations. Then, the two visitors had a meeting with exchange students from their university who are currently studying at Gakushuin and Japanese students scheduled to be on the exchange program at Dongguk from this coming September. In an amicable atmosphere, they talked about campus life at Dongguk University.
On the same day, the International Centre held an information session for the Korean language program to be provided in August at Dongguk University. Mr. JUNG explained details about the program in Japanese to interested Gakushuin students.
It is expected that this visit will lead to further development of international exchange and strengthen cooperation between the two universities.
Visitors from Science Po Lyon, France September 30, 2019

On September 30, Professor and Director Renaud Payre and Associate Professor Béatrice Jaluzot visited Gakushuin University from Science Po Lyon, France. They met with Professor and Dean Naoto Nonaka and Professor Takashi Oka from Gakushuin's Faculty of Law, as well as Professor Sumio Yamada, Director of the International Centre, and had productive discussions about exchange programs and future cooperation between the two universities. A Japanese student who studied as an exchange student for one year at Science Po Lyon helped showing the two visiting professors around the Gakushuin campus. It is expected that we will see enhanced academic and research exchanges between the two academic institutions.

On Wednesday, July 3, 2019, a seven-member delegation from Tamkang University, Taiwan, led by Dr. Huan-Chao Keh, who assumed the office of President in August 2018, visited Gakushuin University to meet with President Toshikazu Inoue and other representatives from Gakushuin.
Tamkang University and Gakushuin University have been actively engaging with each other through the student exchange program since the conclusion of the MOU in 2013. In 2015, ten students from Tamkang University came to Gakushuin to attend classes conducted in English. In addition, Gakushuin's International Centre has been organizing the short-term Chinese language program at Tamkang University every spring since 2016. Taking this opportunity, the two universities confirmed that they will strengthen their relationship in research as well to enhance collaboration in both student and research exchange.
Visitors from the University of Torino, Italy May 8, 2019


On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, a delegation from the University of Torino, Italy, led by Professor and Rector Gianmaria Ajani paid a courtesy call on Gakushuin University. Professor Ajani and other delegation members, including Mrs. Ajani, Professor and Vice-Rector for Education and International Relations Lorenza Operti, and Associate Professor of Japanese Language Literature Gianluca Coci, met with President Toshikazu Inoue, along with Vice President Koichi Iwata, Professor Mamiko Ito, and Associate Professor Tatsuaki Kobayashi from Gakushuin. This was the first visit from the University of Torino, although the two institutions have been actively engaging with each other through student exchanges and other activities since the conclusion of the MOU in 2015.
After the meeting, the delegation had a pleasant time with exchange students studying at Gakushuin from the University of Torino and Gakushuin students who are scheduled to start their study in Torino this fall. It is expected that this visit will lead to more active exchange between the two universities.
Visitor from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom April 15, 2015

On Thursday, April 9, 2015, Professor Fumiko Narumi-Munro of the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom (Japanese Studies, School of Literatures) visited Gakushuin University.
After meeting the Director of the Centre for International Exchange Professor Takahiko Akiyama and Manager Miyazawa of the Centre for International Exchange at the Centre for International Exchange (2F Central Building), she spoke to international students from the University of Edinburgh who are participating in the exchange program and students of the Faculty of Letters, Department of History who will be sent to the University of Edinburgh, and gave detailed advice about the exchange program.
It is hoped that the visit will lead to an even livelier exchange with the University of Edinburgh, including student exchanges.
Visitor from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom January 23, 2015
On Monday, December 22, 2014, Professor Mika Brown of the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom (Head of Japanese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities) visited Gakushuin University.
After holding talks at a meeting room at the Central Building 2F with Vice-President Professor Arakawa of the Department of Physics, along with steering committee members Professor Kaneda of the Faculty of Letters and Manager Miyazawa of the Centre for International Exchange, information was exchanged about the students who are planning to come to study at Gakushuin University from the University of East Anglia and about the universities' exchange programs.
It is hoped that the visit will lead to an even livelier exchange with the University of East Anglia, including student exchanges.
Visitor from Murdoch University, Australia December 18, 2014

On Thursday, December 18, 2014, Dr. Takeshi Moriyama of Murdoch University, Australia (Senior Lecturer in Japanese, School of Arts) visited Gakushuin University.
After holding talks at a meeting room at the Central Building 2F with Director of the Centre for International Exchange Professor Ken Mizuno, Vice-President Professor Arakawa of the Department of Physics and Vice-President Professor Mano of the Faculty of Letters, along with steering committee members Professor Kaneda of the Faculty of Letters and Manager Miyazawa of the Centre for International Exchange, he spoke to the two Gakushuin University students who are planning to become the first students to study at Murdoch University as exchange students and gave them detailed advice on their overseas studies.
In addition to visiting Gakushuin University's registered tangible cultural property buildings at Nogikan and the East Building Annex during a campus tour, he also visited the classrooms and cafeterias with a view to future visits by exchange students from Murdoch University. At the Gakushuin University Museum of History, he was particularly eager to study the collections of historical artifacts from the Edo Period, which is his specialist field.
Arrangements to conclude a partnership agreement with Murdoch University are entering the final stages, and are expected to be completed in the near future. A lively opinion exchange was held with Dr. Moriyama about a variety of different subjects, including exchange such as student exchanges, and it is hoped that an active exchange develops between the two universities in the future.
Visit from University of New South Wales, Australia December 9, 2014
On Tuesday, December 9, 2014, Professor Chihiro Kinoshita Thomson (School of Humanities and Languages) of the University of New South Wales, Australia (a partner school of Gakushuin University) visited our university and held an opinion exchange with Centre for International Exchange staff about future exchange programs at the Central Building 2F, Centre for International Exchange.
Professor Thompson is a former student of Gakushuin University, and she has worked hard for many years on the conclusion of a partner school agreement with the University of New South Wales and on the exchange that has continued since the agreement. We were delighted to welcome her despite her busy schedule during a trip back to Japan. Her trip provided a meaningful opportunity to exchange opinions on the potential for future exchanges between the two universities.
Visit by Vietnamese university students - Hosting of Vietnam-Japan University Student Exchange Meeting
November 14, 2014

On Friday, November 14, with help from the Japan Overseas Cooperative Association (JOCA) we were able to welcome around 50 students from Vietnamese universities as part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' "JENESYS 2.0 Youth Exchange with North American Region" project, and an exchange meeting was held with students of Gakushuin University.
The exchange meeting, which was held at the International Conference Room, Central Building 12F, was held exclusively in English on the theme of "China's expansion and the marine question - the response of surrounding countries". Professor Michimi Muranushi and Professor Yoshifumi Nakai of the Faculty of Law, Department of Political Studies gave a presentation, and an opinion exchange was held after speeches by representatives of both countries.
On the day, a Vietnamese student who is currently enrolled at the Faculty of Economics, Department of Management also took part and gave an introduction of Gakushuin University in the Vietnamese language.
At the exchange meeting, which was led by the two professors, frank opinions were exchanged and participants from both sides felt that the event was extremely worthwhile. The meeting ended in a very lively and engaged atmosphere.
Visit from Keimyung University, South Korea July 24, 2014
On Thursday, July 24, 2014, Professor You, Ok Hee of Keimyung University, South Korea (Department of Japanese Language and Literature), a partner school of Gakushuin University, visited Gakushuin University.
After holding talks with Centre for International Exchange staff at the Centre for International Exchange Meeting Room, Central Building 2F, a lively opinion exchange was held about future exchange between the two universities.
It is hoped that the most will be made of this opportunity to develop even more meaningful exchange between South Korean universities and Gakushuin University.
Soochow University, Taiwan - University President and Others Visit June 27, 2014

On Friday, June 27, 2014, President Wei-Ta Pan of Soochow University, Taiwan (a partner school of Gakushuin University) visited our university along with two other visitors.
After holding talks at the Central Building 2F Meeting Room with Centre for International Exchange steering committee members Vice-President Arakawa, Professor Kaneda of the Faculty of Letters, and Manager Miyazawa of the Centre for International Exchange, presentations about both universities were given. A lively opinion exchange was then held about future exchange between the two universities, and a campus tour was given.
We were accompanied during the visit by an international student from Taiwan who graduated from Soochow University and is currently enrolled at Doctoral Course at the Gakushuin University Graduate School of Management, and by a Japanese student who studied on the exchange program at Soochow University in Academic Year 2013 and is currently enrolled on a master's course at the Gakushuin University Graduate School of Humanities, Department of Japanese Language and Literature. It was an extremely friendly meeting, with conversation held in both Taiwanese and English.
It is hoped that the recent visit by the President will lead to closer exchanges between the two universities and the continued development of exchanges in the future.

Visit by representatives of 12 Taiwanese universities June 19, 2014

On Thursday, June 19, 2014, teaching staff involved in international exchange at 12 Taiwanese universities visited Gakushuin University, including representatives of our Taiwanese partner school Tamkang University.
After receiving an explanation of Gakushuin University from Centre for International Exchange staff at the International Conference Room, Central Building 12F, a lively Q&A session was held on the theme of the state of higher education in Japan, and a campus tour was given.
It is hoped that the opportunity presented by the visit will be used to develop international exchange between Gakushuin University and Taiwanese universities even further in the future.

On Thursday, May 29 2014, Professor Béatrice Jaluzot of Sciences Po Lyon (a partner school of Gakushuin University) visited our university.

Visit from the University of York, United Kingdom May 14, 2014
On Wednesday, May 14 2014, Matt Smelt-Webb, Manager of the Centre for Global Programmes at the University of York (a partner school of Gakushuin University), visited our university.
After holding talks with the Director of the Centre for International Exchange at the Centre for International Exchange Meeting Room, Central Building 2F, presentations were given in English to around 30 students planning to participate in a summer language program at the University of York as part of their preparatory work, and opinions were exchanged with the students.

After holding talks with the Director of the Centre for International Exchange at the Centre for International Exchange Meeting Room, Central Building 2F, a lively opinion exchange was held on the topic of exchange programs between the two universities.
