Wakuwaku Toshima Japanese Classes

As part of the "Japanese Language Education Program for Foreigners Living in Japan" commissioned by Japan's Cultural Agency, "Wakuwaku Toshima Japanese Classes" provide foreign residents living in Toshima City and its vicinity with an opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills to live an enjoyable life in Japanese community and to learn about the Japanese way of living and culture. Participants also receive useful information to live in the Toshima area.

Two classes (Wakuwaku and Gungun) are available to learners at different proficiency levels. Participants are free to choose from the two classes. For your reference, the English version of the leaflet explaining the classes is available here. You can also check the Wakuwaku Facebook site.

Below are some details about the program in 2021-22.

When: 10:00 am-12:30 pm on Saturdays from June 5
Where: West Bldg. No. 2, Room 403/405, Gakushuin University (1-5-1 Mejiro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo)
- 3 minutes from the Mejiro Station on the JR Yamanote Line
- 7 minutes from the Zoshigaya Station on the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Lilne
- 8 minutes from the Kishibojin Station on the Tokyo Toei Arakawa Tram Line.

  • Please note that the classes may be offered online, depending on the situation of COVID-19 infection in Tokyo.
  • If you can not physically come to the class for some reason, please consult with us.

Target learners:

  1. Foreign residents who have no Japanese learning experience because they have been busy with work or childcare.
  2. Foreign residents who are living or working in Toshima City and its vicinity.
  3. Those who are aged 16 and older.

Wakuwaku class (30 lessons)

June 5 - August 7, 2021 (10 lessons): "Let's try speaking Japanese!"
To say "Hello" and greet others

August 28 - October 30, 2021 (10 lessons): "Let's be prepared for disasters"
Going to a hospital
To prepare for a fire and earthquake, etc.

November 20, 2021 - January 29, 2022 (10 lessons): "Let's try more things!"
Trying on the clothes
to use communal facilities, etc.

Gungun class (32 lessons)

June 5 - August 7, 2021 (10 lessons): "Let's go out to town!"
Going to a hairdresser
To know new people, etc.

August 28 - October 30, 2021 (10 lessons): "Let's enrich your lives!"
To make arrangements with people, etc.

November 20 - December 25, 2021 (6 lessons): "Let's try new things!"
How to make complaints or return purchased goods
Introducing your own culture, etc.

January 8 - February 12, 2022 (6 lessons): "Special session"
Let's try to express yourself with Japanese people in your community.
