Gakushuin U. Grand Design 2039: International symposium
7 Nov 2024
On November 2-3, 2024, the international symposium, "La culture populaire japonaise et l'Occident: Du point de vue des études sur le manga et l'animation et de la théorie du genre (Japanese Popular Culture and the West: From the Perspective of Manga and Animation Studies and Gender Theory)," was held in an in-person/online hybrid format, connecting Museum Unterlinden, in Colmar, France, and East Building No. 1, Gakushuin University. This is part of the International Centre's project of "creating programs on Japanese culture," one of the priority measures set out in the university-wide long-term plan, "Gakushuin U. Grand Design 2039."
The symposium was streamed bilingually in Japanese and French, with a total of over 250 in-person and online attendees over the two days. The discussion theme was "Japanese Manga and Animation in the World" for Day 1 and "Japanese Popular Culture and Gender" for Day 2. Researchers in various fields came together to have intellectual exchange across borders. It was a good opportunity to promote interactions among researchers studying Japanese culture, enhancing Gakushuin's collaborative relationship with the European Center for Japanese Studies in Alsace (CEEJA).
