Modern Japanese Literature

I specialize in modern Japanese literature and culture, particularly in the relationships between literature, art, and the standard Japanese language during the Meiji and Taisho periods. I have also recently worked on Japanese films, mainly by Yasujiro Ozu and Mikio Naruse. In class, students are encouraged to think about different expressions in novels, films, and pictures, as well as how one’s interpretation of novels is affected when taking into consideration modern cultural factors such as the presentation of women and families.
