Specialization

Early Modern Japanese Literature, History of Poetry

Research field

The main research topics I am interested in include literature in the Edo period, the history of poetry (particularly of waka and Chinese poems), appreciation of the classics, and the comparative study of Japanese and Chinese literature. More specifically, I focus on the study of the literary activities of Emperor Go-Mizunoo, who was at the center of the poets in the court during the Edo period, as well as those of Razan Hayashi, a famous Chinese scholar in the same era. In addition, I am also interested in how the “The Tale of Genji” and “The Tales of Ise” were read in the Edo period. The main goal of my study, at present, is to look at the history of classical literature from as wide of a perspective as possible. In class, haikai and senryu are often used for exercises.
