Feature 1

Wide-ranging study from a cultural perspective

The Department of Japanese Studies offers a rich curriculum, through which students can learn about Japanese culture from various angles, including folklore and history; literature, fine arts, and ideas; and modern society. The objective of the Department is to instill understanding of the history and special characteristics of Japanese culture, from ancient times to the present day. Students are encouraged to study deeply and meticulously according to their individual interests.

Feature 2

Learning about traditional culture through theory and practice

Through common courses, students learn through hands-on experience about cultural traditions such as tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy, incense-smelling ceremony, and studies in usages and practices of the ancient court and military households. In the Department's specialized courses, students attend lectures aimed at developing a theoretical understanding of these cultural phenomena. This unique curriculum of both practical and theoretical learning is aimed at cultivating deep understanding of traditional Japanese culture.

Cultivating advanced communication skills

The world has long been fascinated with Japanese culture, and interest in this topic continues to spread today. The Department of Japanese Studies prepares students to acquire advanced communication skills, including linguistic ability and information processing capabilities, necessary for conveying the unique characteristics of Japanese culture to the world. The opportunity to study alongside many accomplished foreign students in a rich academic environment is one of the great attractions of the Department.
