GEM Microdata Reuse

GEM has been building databases in the fields of economics and management that can contribute to society and conducting further research based on them. Please contact us for more information about reusing the databases.

Job-Specific Wage Statistics Project

This project aims to develop standard job-specific wage statistics methods and provide wage data based on these methods to society. Through discussions with a study group consisting of representatives from major organizations related to wage statistics (private research institutes, employers' associations, and labour unions) and wage experts, we developed a 'role-specific wage measurement system'. It has been utilized by organizations such as the Nagano Employers' Association and the Japan Analytical Instruments Manufacturers' Association. Future challenges include further expanding the use of this system outside of academia and developing a role-specific wage database.

Intellectual Asset Measurement Project

This research aims to develop and analyse a database for measuring corporate intellectual assets, and its findings are expected to have great social significance. This project has the potential to develop into a stage where new corporate valuations, including intangible intellectual assets, can be collected and used to provide useful information for economic policy and corporate accounting practices.

The revival of the US economy in the 1990s is said to be largely due to productivity improvements brought about by the IT revolution. The extent to which IT capital, including computer equipment and communications equipment, contributed to productivity growth has been measured.

However, since the 2000s, economic phenomena have emerged that cannot be explained solely by analyzing hard IT capital. In response to these challenges, the role of intangible intellectual assets has come to the forefront as a factor that complements physical IT and increases productivity.

Research on intangible intellectual assets is highly relevant, but it is not limited to a single academic field such as economics, business administration, or accounting. Rather, it is characterized by the ability to achieve richer results by bringing together the findings of each academic field.

Consumer Database

As part of our efforts to build our own database, we have been conducting the "Consumer Employment and Consumption Attitudes Panel Survey" since fiscal year 2005. The survey subjects are adult women living in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and we have been continuously collecting data on family, occupation, consumer lifestyle, and other aspects.

Work-Life Balance

GEM has systematically conducted surveys and research projects on the balance between work and life, or so-called 'work-life balance' (WLB). WLB is an important theme for both enabling each and every citizen to achieve a richer life and new working styles, and for companies to make more effective use of their human resources and increase their competitiveness. We believe that research activities will continue to be necessary to ensure that WLB becomes more widely established and widespread in Japanese society.
