I study strategic behavior by individuals, firms, and schools in the institutional context of market economies. I focus on contemporary problems such as housing unaffordability, overwork, time poverty, earn-and-spend treadmill, inequality, and entrepreneurial risk-taking. I also explore foundational issues such as the connection between human vulnerability and cooperation, the motivation for gambling even when the odds are bad, and the effect of making psychological commitments and observing the psychological commitments of others. I use a variety of methods and approaches including game theory, microeconomics, institutional economics, computer simulations, international comparisons, and evolutionary psychology.
