About the Faculty of Economics

Overview

Gakushuin University is a historic university dating back to 1847, but the Faculty of Economics was established in 1964 (Showa 39), the same year as Tokyo last hosted the Olympics. It was established as a separate faculty from the original Faculty of Politics and Economics.

The Faculty of Economics is primarily characterised by the high quality of its faculty and staff. In addition to the many preeminent researchers who are leaders in academic societies both in Japan and overseas, there are also researchers engaged in politics, serving as council members in national and municipal governments, and researchers who have exhibited a great ability to disseminate information to society through mass communications and print publications. From faculty members active in academic societies such as these, as well as those in non-academic society, students will be profoundly influenced not only by specialist knowledge, but also by mindsets and philosophies that will prove useful later in life.

In addition, around 60% of the classes have fewer than 20 students per class; this small, group-based education is thorough. The Faculty of Economics has two departments, the Department of Economics and the Department of Management; however, the number of students in academic year at each department is small in scale at 250 students, and a thorough curriculum featuring a rich variety of specialist education is organised starting from the first year. This is unusual for private institutions, which tend to be biased towards large-scale education. Many of our lectures are also small-scale, and in seminars and applied subjects, you can benefit from a comprehensive, small-class-based education.

Another feature is that the Faculty of Economics is equipped with a variety of educational environments suitable for passionate study throughout your years at the university. The Law and Economics library boasts an overwhelming collection of books, computers and other tools equipped for the information education environment, systems that are specific to the Faculty of Economics that provide support for language education and overseas study, and an education that will further enrich a students' career design. Moreover, there is also a joint laboratory available for both students and faculty, a valuable facility whose staff can provide extensive support in your education.

Currently, there are 10 assistants and 1 research support staff being stationed in the Joint Laboratory. They are supporting student educations and faculty researches as the official staff members of the Faculty of Economics.

Computer & Information Environment
The use of IT equipment such as PCs is essential to student life, and the Faculty of Economics is fostering an information environment that is accessible to students.

For example, in East Building No.2 (Education and Research Centre for the Faculties of Law and Economics), there are PCs that can be used by students of the Faculty of Economics in the hall on the first floor, the PC room on the second floor, in the seminar room of the Law and Economics Library on the fifth floor as well as in the seminar rooms of the Law and Economics Library on the seventh floor.

In addition to East Building No.2, students can freely access PCs, the internet, and work on problem sets from lessons using pre-installed software at the university's computer centre, university library and central education and research building, (There are approximately 400 open PCs that students may use for self-study).

Moreover, in the university's computer rooms, there are approximately 700 PCs in total and many rooms that have call functionality. Many classes and seminars at the Faculty of Economics make use of PCs, and the analytical skills, such as information processing, mathematics and statistics, used in economics and management can be acquired.

Law and Economics Library
Law and Economics Library
Separate from the main university library, the Faculty of Economics has a library called the 'Law and Economics Library' that is furnished with its own specialist books.

This is a large library occupying the third to seventh floors of the 13-story East Building No. 2, commonly known as the Education and Research Centre for the Faculties of Law and Economics. When you are ascending to the fifth floor by elevator, a large atrium opens out, with a relief of a map of the world on the front as a motif. Here, you can enjoy an arch-shaped skylight offering brightness and illumination that differs from your typical library.

Focusing on specialist books of the social sciences, law, political science, economics and management, and boasting an enormous collection in excess of 670,000 books, this large faculty library holds one third of the entire university collection.

In addition, it is also one of the leading self-study spaces on campus, with a total of approximately 600 seats, an information search area with PCs installed, and desks separated into individual booths complete with their own power sockets.

SA & TA System
SA & TA System
The Faculty of Economics has introduced an SA system (student assistant) for undergraduates and a TA (teaching assistant) system for postgraduates as a characteristic learning support system supplementing the lectures and seminars given by professors.

You can ask questions of this SA or TA about points you did not understand during the lecture. There are also times when they provide assistance to the students during lectures (workshops, seminars etc.).

More than 30 SAs and TAs are hired annually for various subjects such as entry level microeconomics, macroeconomics and statistics, as well as mathematics for economics, business mathematics and information processing education or seminars etc. When senior students teach lower level students, it not only improves the education, but student life is also being supported by paying the student teachers a part-time salary.

English-language specialist subjects at the Faculty of Economics
Both the Department of Economics and the Department of Management have established specialist English-language subjects. For example, 'Reading of Foreign Books' studies economics and management through English textbooks and papers. In response to the current age of internationalisation, 'Economics in English', 'Management Theory in English' and 'Business Issues in English' have also been set up. These lessons are given in English by native English-speaking lecturers with actual working experience in the international community.
Foreign Language Education
General language classes are also small classes of 20-30 students.
They offer discussion of various economics and management issues in English and other foreign languages in beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
English conversation program
Conducted by several English conversation schools famous throughout the country (Berlitz, British Council etc.), the English Intensive Program is held during the spring and summer holidays, and the English Evening Program is held weekly on Mondays and Thursdays (limited to the fifth period) or Saturdays (limited to the second period). These programs are held on campus, offered to students of the Faculty of Economics, and are inexpensive.
TOEIC IP Exam Support Program
The TOEIC IP examination is held twice annually for students of the Faculty of Economics.
In this examination support program, the Faculty of Economics provides partial financial support towards the expenses paid by the students.
Training camp assistance system for overseas seminars
In order to carry out seminar training camps overseas, we reduce the burden on students through partial subsidy from the Faculty of Economics.
* There are partial subsidies for domestic seminar trainings as well.
Overseas short-term English training scholarship system
This is a system providing scholarships to students of the Faculty of economics who have achieved significant results through participating in language training at the language schools of overseas universities in English-speaking countries or similar language schools during the summer vacation.
Japanese dissertation exercise program for foreign graduate students
We are implementing a Japanese dissertation seminar program for foreign graduate students at the Faculty of Economics. This will be useful for improving your Japanese-language essay-writing skills.

Fieldwork
Subsidies for transportation and accommodation are provided to students for field research such as joint seminars and factory and facility tours conducted as a part of seminar activities.

Moreover, for seminar camps, the Faculty of Economics also has a system in place which provides support to students with regard to transportation and accommodation expenses in order to promote seminar activities both in Japan and overseas.

Self-study Room
There is a study room on the 1st floor of East Building No.2 (Education and Research Centre for the Faculties of Law and Economics) which students may use freely. While it may be used freely, please note that prior to exams it may become crowded with students studying intensely for their exams.
Similarly in the lobby on the 1st floor, there are tables, chairs and computers which can be used for students' group study sessions, as well groups to prepare for lessons and seminars.
Furthermore, there are plenty of spaces and seminar rooms available to groups and for self study at the University Library and the Law and Economics library in East Building No.2, which students may use freely in support of their studies.
Gakushuin University has opened a Learning Support Centre. It may be used both as a self-study room and for learning support for examinations.

  • Presentation support (How to create presentation materials, presentation rehearsals, how to ask questions, etc.)

  • Hosting various short courses, study groups, etc.

Qualifications
Qualifications
The Faculty of Economics provides educational and financial support for the acquisition of bookkeeping qualifications.

There are many other qualifications that can be obtained studying at the Faculty of Economics.
There are no particular restrictions on certifications, and there are information processing engineering, certified public accountant, public notary, SME management consultancy, registered real-estate brokerage, registered customs specialist and sales certifications that can be obtained through examination while studying at the Faculty of Economics.
Of course, it is also useful for national civil servant and local public official examinations, and by acquiring the credits of prescribed subjects in the teacher training course, you can also obtain teaching licenses such as for a junior high school teacher (Social Studies) and senior high school teacher (civil/information).
Certification incentive system
The Faculty of Economics will provide incentives to those who pass the following qualification exams:
* Those who pass the Certified Public Accountant examination essay examination
* Those who pass the Certified Public Accountant examination short answer examination
* Those who pass the items of the Tax Accountant examinations
These incentives are limited to undergraduate and graduate students of the Faculty of Economics

Early Graduation System
Early Graduation System
Although standard university education is a four year system, the Faculty of Economics has introduced an early graduation system, allowing students with excellent grades to graduate in their third year.

Assuming that students with excellent grades will go on to advanced specialist education, or that they will respond to societal needs as highly skilled workers, those students are permitted to graduate early or advance to graduate school if they maintain the defined grades.
This system enables students to acquire their Master's Degree in a total of five years (three years of undergraduate study and two years of graduate study). Furthermore, the Graduate School of Economics also has special measures to shorten the master's course from two years to one. Therefore, subject to your efforts, it is possible to obtain a master's degree in just four years.
