On November 25, the International Centre held an online Japanese confectionery making workshop for international students. This event was organized in lieu of the regular one-day bus trip that usually happens in October but was canceled this year due to the spread of COVID-19.
A total of eight international students and five Japanese volunteer students participated in the morning and afternoon sessions of the online workshop. Under the instruction of an artisan working for a 300 year-old Japanese confectionery in Fukui Prefecture, they struggled to make three kinds of Japanese cakes in the shapes of a red maple leaf, a chrysanthemum, and a chestnut while enjoying conversations with each other.
In this workshop, the participating students were able to learn not only how to make Japanese cakes but the significance of the craftsmanship. It was an excellent opportunity for both international and Japanese students to experience a glimpse of Japanese culture.
