In lieu of the one-day bus trip regularly held in October but canceled this year due to the spread of COVID-19, the International Centre organized an online Edo-style "fuurin" wind bell painting workshop on December 1. A total of 11 international students and 7 Japanese volunteer students participated in the morning and afternoon sessions of the workshop.
An Edo-style wind bell is decorated with colorful pictures drawn inside of the main body made of transparent glass. As only two Edo fuurin studios have survived until today, it was a very rare opportunity to learn how to paint the bell. After the craftsman's briefing about the traditional Edo-style designs, the participants painted wind bells as they liked under his guidance.
In the past, the wind bell was hung under eaves throughout the year as it was believed to attract good luck. We hope that the wind bells created by the students will bring us good fortune and the pandemic will come to an end soon.
