Scholarships for Privately-funded International Students

In order to reduce the financial burden on overseas students studying at Gakushuin University, the university offers a unique system of "Scholarships and Subsidies for Overseas Students". You might also be recommended for JASSO Scholarships for International Students in Japan or other scholarships for privately-funded students.

Gakushuin University scholarships

Details of each scholarship are posted for the benefit of Gakushuin University students on G-Port or on the bulletin boards.

Scholarships for overseas students

Eligible students: Privately-funded overseas students on a full-time degree course who have "College student" visa status and satisfy the following criteria:
・Students deemed to have difficulties in paying tuition fees for economic reasons.
・Students with academic performance above a certain level in the previous year (for second-year and above undergraduate/graduate students)
* Academic records are not taken into consideration for first-year undergraduate/graduate students.
Amount: Not exceeding 300,000 yen annually (equivalent to US$2750); the amount may change for each academic year
Application and selection period: April (once a year)
Comments: ・Students resitting the year are not eligible
・Lump-sum payment scheduled to be made in October

Subsidies granted to overseas students

Eligible students: Students receiving the Scholarships for Overseas Students who have particularly outstanding academic performance in the previous year (first-year students are not eligible)
Amount: 300,000 yen (annual amount)
Number of students granted a subsidy: 13
Selection period: April (once a year)
Comments: ・Lump-sum payment scheduled to be made in October

Reductions of tuition fees

Eligible students: Privately-funded overseas students on a full-time degree course who have "College student" visa status and are deemed to have difficulties in paying tuition fees for economic reasons.
Reduction rate:

Undergraduate:
30% (annual rate) of total tuitions for students admitted to Gakushuin in or before AY2021.
20% (annual rate) of total tuitions for students admitted to Gakushuin in or after AY2022.

Graduate: 30% of total tuitions (annual rate)
However, in the case of a student who is in the third year of a doctoral program and has earned the credits required to complete the course but needs to remain enrolled for the writing and assessment of his or her doctoral thesis, he or she will be fully exempted from paying tuition fees on condition that the extended enrollment does not exceed three years after earning the credits.
