International students' visit to a fish market and the traditional Shibamata area

On June 4, 2022, 12 international students participated in the tour to visit a bustling fish market and walk around Shibamata, a traditional area in the east side of Tokyo. This neighborhood is well-known for Taishakuten-Daikyoji, an old Buddhist temple. This was the second of the day-trip series organized by the International Centre to give international students an opportunity to experience firsthand Japanese culture and natural beauty.

Led by a tour guide, the participating students looked around the fish market, which is usually not so easily accessible for the public.
A variety of fresh fishes were displayed.
<Walking in the Shibamata area>
Next, the group went to the Daikyoji temple enshrining Taishakuten (Indra in Hinduism). It also preserves Bishamonten, one of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune in the Shibamata area.
Widely known in the temple are the ten carvings depicting portions of the Lotus Sutra which adorn the outer wall of the inner chamber of the Taishaku-do as well as the beautiful garden called "Sui-kei-en."
Then they walked around the quaint town of Shibamata and saw the statue of Tora-san, the main character of a famous Japanese movie set in this town considered as the symbol of Shibamata.
The participants had a long walk in this tour.
