One-day bus trip to Boso, Chiba

29 Jun 2023

On June 18, 41 international students participated in a one-day bus trip. A break in the long rainy season in Japan, it was a sunny, perfect day for an excursion. The chartered bus departed the campus for Boso in Chiba Prefecture.

Daifukuji Temple (Gake Kannon)

Getting stuck in traffic on the way, it took the party longer than expected to reach their first destination, Daifukuji Temple in Tateyama City. The statue of Kannon enshrined in the vermillion-lacquered hall on a hillside of the mountain in the temple grounds is called "Gake Kannon," the Deity of Mercy on a cliff. To get to the Kannon Hall, they had to climb a steep flight of stairs.

Next, the party went to a restaurant called "The Fish" for lunch. In a spectacular location with the ocean stretching out in front, they enjoyed a delicious meal, including loquat jelly. After lunch, they had a good time, looking for souvenirs, enjoying the view of the sea, and eating peanut soft cream, a local delicacy.

Boshu uchiwa fans

The last pleasure of the day was "Boshu uchiwa fan work shop." The Boshu uchiwa fan is one of Japan's major three uchiwa types and a traditional handicraft representing Chiba Prefecture that has long been made in the southern part of Boso.

In the workshop, the students tried their hand at making uchiwa fans. First, each of them chose paper with a favorite pattern printed on it. All of the patterns were beautiful and special to Japan. In accordance with the explanations given by the instructor, they attached the patterned paper of their choice to a bamboo framework and cut the ends of the skeleton uniformly to match the shape of the fan.

After the fans were completed, the participants took a group photo with their own uchiwa. They are sure to remember this trip when they see their fans.
