One-day bus trip to Oshino Hakkai

10 Jun 2024

On May 25, 36 international students joined a one-day bus trip to Oshino Hakkai in Yamanashi Prefecture. They departed from the Gakushuin campus on a chartered bus.

Making Hoto noodles

The first destination was a Hoto noodle shop where the students, most of whom had never heard of Hoto noodles before, made the local specialty.

Wearing an apron, they worked on dough and roll it out under the instruction of the shop staff.

It's important to cut the rolled-out dough carefully in the same width.

Then, it's time to cook and eat the self-made noodles. Everybody is smiling.

Oshino Hakkai

In the afternoon, the party arrived at Oshino Hakkai. Meaning the Eight Seas of Oshino, Oshino Hakkai consists of eight ponds that are fed by underflows of Mount Fuji through porous layers of volcanic rock. This is a charming place with really Japanese buildings and souvenir shops along the ponds. The students enjoyed walking around the site.

This bus trip provided the international students with an opportunity to enjoy a unique local cuisine and part of the Mt. Fuji UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, an archetypal image of Japan.
