Workshop on Japanese dyeing
5 Jul 2024
On June 22, 20 international students participated in a dyeing workshop at a studio, "Some no sato Ochiai" in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
The workshop began with an explanation of why dyeing business had become thriving in this Ochiai area and what is the dyeing technique. According to the craftsperson, Ochiai, the name of the area, means where two rivers meet. As the name suggests, the area has plentiful clear water, and many dyeing craftsmen moved there in the Meiji period to seek clean water. This is how the land of dyeing was born.
The students were eager to learn and asked lots of questions.
After the lecture, they started dyeing patterns of their choice on cross body bags. With a stencil, they brushed their favorite colors.
Concentrating on their work, the students selected patterns and colors and carefully dyed their bags. The designs were all distinctive and rich in variety.
Participating students made positive comments on the workshop.
"It was a good opportunity to learn a lot about Japanese dyeing culture that has been passed on since the Edo period."
"It was a very valuable experience as I was able to make my original bag."
"The English-language video helped us understand Japanese dyeing more deeply."
To them, it was a good opportunity to experience the beauty and technique of the Japanese dyeing culture.
